In a breast reconstruction procedure, our goal is to restore to the best of our ability one or both breasts. Breast reconstruction is performed after, or at the same time as, a mastectomy. There are often multiple stages of this process, and while they do sometimes start at the same time as the mastectomy, they can also start later on. There are different types of breast reconstruction, namely a flap reconstruction or an implant-based reconstruction. In the flap reconstruction, we use tissue from another area of the patient’s body to create the breast. In an implant reconstruction, as you can probably guess, we use a breast implant to create the new breast.
Recovering from a mastectomy, both mentally and physically is different for each woman and there is no right or wrong way to deal with that loss. For some women, reconstructing the lost breast or breasts may not be a priority, while for others it may be a crucial part in their healing process to feel whole and like themselves again.
